Granada is one of the most famous and unique of all Spanish cities. Having been under Arab rule until the end of the 15th Century and being the last city to be re-conquered by the Spanish Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, Granada’s history and culture has many Arabic influences. History and culture oozes from this city.
There are many interesting places and sites to visit, from all eras and all styles for example having taken 181 years to complete, Granada’s Cathedral boosts Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance styles, all combined to create a grand and magnificent piece of architecture. Granada is one of the most visited Spanish tourist destinations as its fame and beauty is recognized worldwide.
You will find Granada in the most southern Spanish autonomous regions of Andalusia. It is the capital of the province of the same name. Two rivers flow through Granada, the Darro and Genil and these rivers originate from the Sierra Nevada Mountains that are the backdrop to Granada. Granada has the perfect geographical position, being only thirty minutes from both The Sierra Nevada and the beaches of the Costa Tropical. The Alpujarras, Cordoba, Seville and Ronda are so close to Granada that you can organize one day excursion to these places. There are many things to do all year round here in Granada and Andalusia and you will never be short of activities.
Granada University is one of the most renowned in Spain and therefore it is very popular with students from all around the world. The population of Granada is around 250,000 but can reach 300,000 depending on the number of students in the city. Thanks to this the city is buzzing with bars, restaurants and clubs for all ages and tastes.
Unlike the majority of Modern Spanish cities, tapas are still free in Granada. These are traditional Spanish snacks that are offered with every drink and can range from a few nuts to a mini meal. Tapas tours are a great way to get to know the city and to experience the delights of Spanish cuisine.
For over seven centuries The Alhambra has towered over the city of Granada and it is truly an architectural masterpiece. The Alhambra is a Moorish Palace and is composed of three parts, a fortress, a palace and a small city. Generalife, located alongside The Alhambra, was the summer palace of the Kings and its gardens are home to many different varieties of plants, flowers and vegetables.
The Alhambra has stood the test of time and is the most perfect example of ancient Moorish architecture in Europe. The Alhambra is a World Heritage Site and so UNESCO help to maintain and protect it. The Alhambra is a must see as it epitomizes the Arabic culture and origin of Granada and it helps to explain why Granada is different to other Spanish cities.
The Albaicín is situated on a hill opposite the Alhambra and is the oldest district in Granada and although its origins are not known it is the old Moorish quarter of Granada. When visiting the Alhambra you will be exposed to stunning views of this area, with its small windy streets and many white washed houses.
The Church of San Nicholas is situated on a hill in the Albaicín and from here the city of Granada is laid out with the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada and The Alhambra. It is truly a spectacular sight and you will see the true beauty and splendor of the fantastic city.
